The Flynn Effect: Why the World Keeps (Apparently) Getting Smarter
Hard to believe, but if you could give your great-grandfather the exact same IQ test at your age, chances are you'd outscore him — not because you're smarter than he was, but because of a real, well-documented phenomenon.
James Flynn's discovery
In the 1980s, New Zealand researcher James R. Flynn analyzed decades of IQ test data from dozens of countries and found a consistent pattern: raw, unadjusted scores rose steadily throughout most of the 20th century, at a rate of roughly 3 points per decade. Today that phenomenon is known as the Flynn effect.
Why tests get "renormalized"
This is exactly why IQ tests are periodically recalibrated: if the scale weren't adjusted, today's average population would systematically score higher than the population from 50 years ago, purely from the cumulative effect — not because 100 "means" something different, but because the comparison point shifts with every generation.
The theories trying to explain it
No one has a single proven answer, but the most studied hypotheses include: better childhood nutrition (less malnutrition, better early brain development), more average years of schooling, more cognitively stimulating environments (more reading, more technology, more games requiring abstract reasoning), and fewer childhood illnesses affecting development.
What if the effect is reversing?
This is where it gets even more interesting. Recent studies in countries like Norway, Finland, and Denmark — using data from mandatory military exams, with enormous sample sizes — show the Flynn effect slowed down and even reversed in some cohorts starting in the 1990s. This is informally called the "negative Flynn effect" or reversal, and it remains an area of active research: there's no consensus yet on whether it reflects genuine cognitive change, shifts in the education system, or simply changes in who takes the military exam today.
What is clear from the Flynn effect, whether it's rising or falling, is that IQ isn't a number carved in stone — not for an individual, and not for an entire generation. It's a statistical snapshot that moves with time, education, and environment.
